Build sideways without building fragile
A practical introduction to SNOT connections, offsets, and the small checks that keep ambitious surfaces locked together.

Studs are directions, not rules
Studs Not On Top—usually shortened to SNOT—is less a single trick than a way of thinking. A stud can point up, sideways, inward, or down. Once you stop treating the baseplate as gravity, clean façades and unexpected curves become possible.
Start with headlight bricks and brackets. Both create reliable ninety-degree changes of direction, but they place studs at different offsets. Build a tiny test module first and learn exactly where each new surface lands.

Respect the module
Five stacked plates equal the height of two-and-a-half studs. That relationship is the quiet engine behind many sideways builds. Use it to bring a vertical panel back into the normal grid without forcing a connection.
A legal connection should settle with fingertip pressure. If a wall bows, a plate lifts, or parts creak, the geometry is fighting you. Rebuild the transition instead of asking the bricks to flex.

Brace the hidden side
The smooth face gets the photograph, but the hidden structure earns it. Tie long sideways sections into the core every six to eight studs. Stagger seams like masonry, and avoid placing every joint on the same vertical line.
Before adding detail, lift the model by the core—not the decorative skin—and give it a gentle turn. If the surface shifts independently, add another tie point.
